The story behind Chiesa del Santissimo Rosario
The ground beneath the church carries an older story. A 16th-century church dedicated to the Annunciation stood here until the 1930 earthquake left it damaged beyond practical use. Architect Domenicantonio Mazzei — who applied the same neogothic hand to a twin church in Roccabascerana — designed the replacement, which was built and constituted as a parish in 1942. The Dominican Fathers have been entrusted with its care since that founding.
The church's status changed significantly on 7 October 2023, when Bishop Arturo Aiello elevated it to a Diocesan Marian Sanctuary — a recognition that formalised what the annual October procession had long expressed in practice. A recent restoration, funded by the Province of Avellino, included renovation of the bell tower.

The Church of the Most Holy Rosary is one of the city's most popular churches, overlooking Avellino's main street. It was built in the 1940s, when it was moved from Piazza della Libertà, where it had stood since the sixteenth century. The neo-Gothic façade features spires, mullioned windows, and a central rose window above the portal, crowned in the lunette by a gold mosaic depicting Our Lady of the Rosary. The interior is divided into three naves, divided by pillars, and has a severe and solemn appearance.
