Santuario dell'Avvocata
At 827 metres on Monte Falerzio, the Santuario dell'Avvocata sits inside a cave that a teenage shepherd named Gabriele Cinnamo found in 1485. The path from Maiori takes six to seven hours return — sixteen kilometres through chestnut woods, past a spring called Acqua del Castagno, past a cave the locals named for salami — and that effort is the point. You arrive not as a tourist but as someone who has earned the threshold.
The sanctuary itself is quiet and spare: a red-brick church face, interior frescoes of the Madonna Assunta, and deeper in, the original grotto with its painted Annunciation and Last Supper. The Grotta Salese nearby has three small arches and a fountain still running. The Madonna statue inside was carved in Ortisei in the 1940s and crowned by John Paul II in 2002.

The story behind Santuario dell'Avvocata
In 1485, a young shepherd named Gabriele Cinnamo reported finding this cave on Monte Falerzio after a dream in which the Virgin Mary asked him to build an altar. He abandoned his flock, became a hermit, and built a chapel inside the cave. A church on the rock above followed in 1503, constructed with papal consent from Pope Leo X, and a bell tower was added later.
The sanctuary passed to Camaldolese monks in 1682, then was suppressed during the Napoleonic period in 1807 — sacked and turned into a military garrison. It was reconstructed in the late nineteenth century, a public worship concession granted in 1892, and the church rebuilt that year. The Benedictine monks of the Badia di Cava have managed the site since then, and still do.

The trail from Maiori starts on Via Casale Alto; contact Maiori municipality or the Abbazia di Cava dei Tirreni before visiting. Spring (April–June) and early autumn offer the most stable conditions. No formal ticketing information is confirmed — treat it as a pilgrimage site, not a ticketed attraction.
Spring and early autumn are the most reliable windows — mild temperatures, manageable trail conditions, and the wildflowers that give the ridge its purple-flowered Portensclagiella. July is driest but the ascent in full summer heat is genuinely demanding; November through February brings the heaviest rain and the coldest temperatures at altitude.

The tiring climb towards this well situated monument was well worth it for the view at the top. To climb the Falerzio and wask the same route as the pilgrims is truly an experience to never forget. Depending on how fast a hiker you are, the monastery should be reachable in about 2,5/3 hours starting all the way down in Maiori. There is a fresh water spring about half way up the mountain and I suggest you don't miss it, you'll need it, trust me. Whan you reach the monument it would be an absolute waste not to go up to the actual top of the mountain. It's about a 20 munite walk from the monastery and not too difficult a trail compared to the path up so far. The view there is something one must experience for themselves and is difficult to put into words. The feeling of finally reaching the top was truly as if I was on top of the world.
If you like hiking and chessnuts and amazing views: this is the trail for you. Well defined trail (2-3 hour walk from Maiori). Trail starts at Via Casale Dei Cicerali. Parking available couple of minutes walking to the coast.
Fantastic hiking with amazing views. From the top you will get 360 views of Salerno, Maiori and Ravello. The path is easy to find in Maiori and marked with red dots/arrows(we selected the left path). It took us about 2 h to reach the top. Bring a lot of water.
The church was closed when I arrived,but the arrounding view is beautiful
Four stars for the experience of getting there and the beautiful views from the top. A variety of views no less. The church itself is not worth visiting if you have architecture or art as criteria. It's simple and the art is rather disappointing to put it kindly. But if you like climbing and want the panoramic view of the coast. This is a good place to do that. I also went here camping because of the feast. That was a great experience as well. If you find yourself here at that time of the year then consider camping. You will meet nice people and have a great time
