Quartaccio sits on the Tyrrhenian shoreline just outside Civitavecchia, a stretch of beach that locals tend to reach before the summer crowds find their rhythm. The water here is the same deep Lazio blue you see from the ferry terminal to the south, but the pace is slower — fishing boats rather than cruise ships on the horizon.

The coastline around Civitavecchia has been in continuous use since Roman times — the Terme Taurine thermal baths and Villa Traiana lie just inland, evidence of how thoroughly the Romans worked this stretch of the Tyrrhenian shore. The port itself was developed under Emperor Trajan in the early second century AD, and the surrounding coast has served fishing communities, military installations and leisure bathers in the centuries since.
Quartaccio as a named place along this coast reflects the local habit of parcelling the shoreline into informal districts, a practice common to Italian coastal towns where beach access has long been divided between free public stretches and managed concessions.

Civitavecchia is well connected by rail from Rome — trains run roughly every 30 minutes and the journey takes under an hour. The beach is accessible from late spring through early autumn. May, June and September offer the most comfortable conditions without peak-season crowds.
Civitavecchia runs hot and dry from June through August, with air temperatures regularly reaching the high 20s Celsius and sea temperatures warm enough to swim comfortably from late May. Spring and early autumn are mild and far less crowded — September in particular offers reliable sun without the August intensity.

The beach is actually free, so you can bring your own umbrella. Alternatively, you can pay for one, at 6 eur per item. The restaurant at the beach was so-so. I didn't like the food, but the staff was very pleasant and friendly, almost compensating it.

Stunning atmosphere and delicious food! Try the seafood risotto, and fish ravioli is to die for. The staff is fantastic and incredibly friendly, making everyone feel at home immediately. A perfect place to relax for the day with everything you need, including comfortable seating, good wifi and an amazing sunset. My go-to place on the beach while in Rome. Thank you!!!
