Porta Messina
Porta Messina is where Taormina begins. Walk through its neoclassical arch and you cross from the road that once ran north toward Messina into the pedestrianised calm of Corso Umberto I — 800 metres of stone-paved street that carries you through the entire historic centre.
The Bourbon coat of arms is still carved into the keystone, and a commemorative tablet above the arch marks the gate's opening in 1808. Most people pass under it without stopping long, which is precisely why it rewards a pause.

People who know Taormina well tend to arrive early, before the tour groups spill off the buses on Via Pirandello. The light through the arch in the first hour after sunrise hits the stone at an angle worth photographing. Come back in the evening and the same view turns amber.
The story behind Porta Messina
Taormina's city walls trace their origins to the Arab period of Sicilian rule, when the ridge-top town was fortified against the shifting powers of the medieval Mediterranean. The gate standing today, however, is a Bourbon project: King Ferdinand IV ordered it rebuilt and opened it in 1808, giving it the name Porta Ferdinandea in his honour.
The name changed after Italian unification in 1860, when the gate was renamed Porta Messina for the road it faces. The commemorative tablet above the arch is the one surviving inscription of Ferdinand's patronage — easy to miss if you walk through without looking up.
Good to know
The bus station sits just below on Via Pirandello, making this your natural entry point if you've come up from the train station at Giardini-Naxos. The arch is open at all hours with no fee. Skip the shops immediately inside — prices settle further along Corso Umberto.
April through October is the most comfortable window: daytime temperatures run between 20°C and 30°C with little rain, and the light is good from mid-morning onward. July and August can push toward 40°C on the hottest days, so early morning arrivals make particular sense then.

We had a wonderful dinner at Porta Messina. The seafood pasta was absolutely delicious — fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked pasta, and amazing flavors that made it one of the highlights of our stay in Taormina. A special thank you to Saif and Dario for their outstanding service. They were attentive, friendly, and made us feel genuinely welcome throughout the entire evening. Great food, excellent atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Taormina!
This was another major disappointment on our trip. I honestly can’t believe this place has over 12,000 high reviews—the food we had was actually a little below average. It feels like yet another one of those tourist-trap Italian restaurants that relies on a massive number of online reviews, but the actual quality on the plate just doesn't deliver. To be fair, they seem to offer popular cooking classes, and it felt like that might be where the majority of these positive reviews are actually coming from. I can't comment on the classes themselves, but if you are just coming here to sit down for a meal, the food is average at best and below average at worst. Skip it and find a quiet local spot instead. One plus side was the wine was good.
The food was very good overall, especially the seafood linguine and the cod, which were both flavorful and well prepared. The dishes were a little salty for our taste, but still enjoyable. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We had a great time.
The food was absolutely amazing. And the atmosphere outside on the terrace is to die for. Truly one of the best restaurants we ate at in Sicily and in Taormina! Rose and Francesco were very attentive and always had a smile. It was like eating at your mom’s house. It felt like family. We will recommend this restaurant to everyone that comes here. The Margherita Pizza and Panna Cotta were the best!
We spontaneously came here while celebrating my birthday, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. The seafood pasta was honestly the best seafood pasta I’ve ever eaten — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Everything tasted incredible. The service was phenomenal as well, and our waiter Saif made the whole evening even more special with his kindness and professionalism. I felt truly welcomed and had such a beautiful time here. Definitely a place I’ll remember and recommend to everyone!
