At the far end of Via Bagnoli Croce, where the town's foot traffic finally thins, a free gate opens onto a garden that has been absorbing Taormina's noise for over a century. Inside, the eclectic pavilions Lady Florence Trevelyon built between 1890 and 1899 — small, orientalist structures that locals call 'the beehives' — stand among magnolias, hibiscus and bougainvillea. She designed them as bird-watching stations, and they still carry that quality of quiet attention.
From the upper terraces, the view opens across Giardini Naxos and the sea to Mount Etna, a panorama that arrives without ceremony. Benches face it directly. The garden is about five minutes on foot from the Teatro Antico, yet it runs at a different pace entirely.

The story behind Giardino Pubblico di Taormina (Villa Comunale)
Lady Florence Trevelyon, a relative of Queen Victoria who arrived in Taormina in 1884 under the shadow of a court scandal, married local doctor Salvatore Cacciola in 1890. Over the following decade she designed and built the garden's Victorian follies — orientalist pavilions she used to observe birds — shaping the estate largely according to her own vision.
She died in 1907, leaving the property to Cacciola, who later served as the town's mayor. In 1922 it passed to municipal ownership, and in 1923 Mayor Giovanni Colonna Duca di Cesarò formalised the public expropriation, renaming the park in his own honour. The name never entirely stuck; most people still call it the Villa Comunale.

Free entry, open 09:00–24:00 in summer and 09:00–20:00 in winter. Gravel and paved paths make most of the garden manageable for wheelchairs. Budget around two hours.
April through October is the most comfortable window — temperatures climb toward 28°C in July and August, with long sunny days and very little rain. The winter garden is quieter and cooler (February averages around 8°C), and October through December brings the bulk of the annual rainfall, so pack accordingly.
