The story behind Piazza IX Aprile
The square was originally called Piazza Sant'Agostino, after the Church of Sant'Agostino built here in 1448 — that building still stands on the eastern side, though it was deconsecrated long ago and now houses the town's public library. The piazza as it looks today dates to 1891, and three years later it hosted the Mediterranean Parliamentary Congress.
The name IX Aprile — April 9th — marks a specific and slightly awkward moment. On that date in 1860, a rumour tore through Sunday mass at Taormina's cathedral: Garibaldi had landed at Marsala to begin the liberation of Sicily. The town celebrated. The rumour was a month premature — Garibaldi actually landed on May 9th — but the date stuck anyway, and the square kept it.

The piazza is free, always open, and sits at the centre of Corso Umberto — Porta Messina and Porta Catania are both within a few minutes' walk. Arrive before 9 AM or after 6 PM to move around freely. December mornings are surprisingly calm.
April through October brings warm, mostly dry days well-suited to sitting outside; July delivers up to eleven hours of sun and temperatures around 28°C. Winter is mild but wetter, particularly October through December, and January mornings can be cool at around 11°C — though the square empties of crowds almost entirely.
