Piazza Sordello
Piazza Sordello is where Mantua keeps its oldest bones. Stand at its center and you're on ground the Romans built over, the Bonacolsi family fortified, and the Gonzagas eventually remade into a stage for their own magnificence — the Palazzo Ducale's Palazzo del Capitano wing stretching along one side, the Duomo's three mismatched faces (baroque front, Gothic flank, Romanesque bell tower) along another.
At the square's southeast corner, a glass panel covers the remains of a mosaic-floored Roman villa, found in 2006 and left in place for anyone to peer down into. It's an unassuming detail that quietly explains the whole place.

People who come back tend to time their return to noon or 6 pm, when the Torre dell'Orologio's astronomical clock — running since 1470 — sends the Three Wise Men out through a small door to bow before the Virgin. It takes about a minute and draws a small crowd. Worth it.
The story behind Piazza Sordello
The square was laid out in 1330 on the oldest inhabited ground in Mantua — land that had marked the city's limits from the Roman period through the Middle Ages. It was originally called Piazza San Pietro. The Bonacolsi family had already been shaping the space for decades: Pinamonte dei Bonacolsi built the Voltone di San Pietro vault in the 1270s to fortify his palace, and the Palazzo Bonacolsi itself went up in 1281.
When the Gonzagas displaced the Bonacolsi in 1328, they inherited the square and set about making it their own. By the late 14th century, with land reclamation opening the city outward, they ordered existing houses and towers demolished to carve out a triumphal approach to their ever-expanding City-Palace. Francesco I Gonzaga rebuilt the cathedral between 1395 and 1401. For the next two centuries, the Gonzagas used Piazza Sordello as a calculated backdrop for their power. The square's eventual renaming honored Sordello da Goito, the 13th-century troubadour born near Mantua.
Good to know
The square is a 1.2 km walk from Mantua station, or take bus lines 4C, 4S, 4T, 6, or 12 to the Duomo stop. The cobblestones are uneven — wear sensible shoes. The Palazzo Ducale needs at least two hours for the highlights; the piazza itself warrants thirty to sixty minutes just for the exteriors.
Mantua sits in the Po Valley, which means July and August bring heavy humidity that makes the open stone of the piazza feel airless by midday. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for lingering outside. Winter is cold and often grey, but the square empties out and the facades read more clearly without the crowds.

So underrated, compared to many squares in different European capitals. The "piazza" is surrounded by the famous Ducalo Palace.
Nice square to browse around. They are different attractions around. I would recommend at least two days to be able to visit Montova 😃😍
