Piazza delle Erbe announces itself through its clock tower first — a 15th-century column of stone at the square's center, its astronomical face still tracking the planets and phases of the moon as it has since 1473. Below it, the morning market spreads out: flowers, clothes, the particular noise of a working Italian square. This is Mantua's oldest public space, and it carries that age lightly.
The buildings that ring it span eight centuries without apology. The Palazzo della Ragione dates to 1250. The Rotonda di San Lorenzo sits 150 centimetres below street level, older still. The square has been a cattle market, an administrative centre, and a place of daily commerce — sometimes all at once.

Regulars tend to arrive before the market packs up, pick up an espresso under the porticoes along the square's edge, and spend a few minutes reading the clock tower's face before the tour groups find it. The Museo del Tempo inside the tower is genuinely undervisited — the old gears alone are worth the three euros, and the platform view is one of the better ones in the city.
The story behind Piazza delle Erbe
The square began taking shape in the late 12th century as an unpaved ground for cattle trading on the eastern flank of what would become the Basilica di Sant'Andrea. In 1227 the Palazzo del Podestà divided the space along what is now Via Broletto, and by 1250, when the Palazzo della Ragione was completed, Piazza delle Erbe had become the city's administrative heart.
That role didn't last. As the Bonacolsi and then the Gonzaga consolidated power, the political centre of gravity shifted north to Piazza Sordello. Luca Fancelli, the Florentine architect who reshaped much of Gonzaga-era Mantua, rebuilt the colonnades before the Palazzo della Ragione and raised the clock tower in 1473, commissioning Bartolomeo Manfredi to build its astronomical mechanism. The 2012 earthquake damaged both the Palazzo della Ragione and the Torre del Salaro, and restoration work followed.

The square is a ten-minute walk from Mantua's train station and is open at all times with no entry fee. Mornings bring the market and the best light on the facades. The clock tower museum charges €3, or is free with the Mantova Sabbioneta Card. The square is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
Summer afternoons can be genuinely hot and muggy in Mantua — the porticoes around the square offer real shade, which matters. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to linger here; winters are cold and damp, though the square is quieter and the architecture easier to photograph without crowds.

It isn't just a square you walk through; it is a square you live in. Unlike the grand, open, and somewhat severe Piazza Sordello (where the Ducal Palace is), Piazza delle Erbe feels cozy and human-scale. It has been the city's marketplace since the Middle Ages, and it still holds onto that vibrant, commercial energy today.

Sadly the astrological clock not working and face partially destroyed. Adjacent is beautiful old roman church, ws walked inside sad , enjoyed quiet peaceful music ...free.
I can see why this is one of the 300 most beautiful cities in Italy. The clock is amazing. The history is so interesting and the people so nice. I recommend visiting on a weekday (tues-frid)
Beautiful square in Mantova. It's probably considered the main square with the most cafes and restaurants and shops. Many beautiful buildings everywhere.
