The bell tower of Santa Barbara announces itself before you find the church — a brick shaft topped by a small round temple that borrows its logic from Bramante's Tempietto in Rome, then filters it through the Venetian window grammar of Serlio and Palladio. It is one of the more quietly confident silhouettes in Mantua's skyline.
The basilica itself was the private chapel of the Gonzaga court, built between 1562 and 1572 to a design by Giovan Battista Bertani — the architect who inherited Giulio Romano's role overseeing the duchy's building works. Inside, an aisle-less nave opens into side chapels lit by two square lanterns, and the 1565 Antegnati pipe organ sits above the choir in a gilded Renaissance case that still holds its original voice.

The story behind Basilica di Santa Barbara
Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga commissioned the basilica as a palatine chapel — a place of worship tied directly to the Gonzaga court rather than to the wider city. Bertani built it in two phases, completing the structure by 1572. From 1565, the Antegnati organ was already in place, and Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi served as chapel master from 1588. Painters including Domenico Brusasorci and Fermo Ghisoni filled its altars and organ doors with work through the 1560s.
For centuries a covered passage linked the chapel to the palace. That connection was severed in the late nineteenth century when the newly unified Italian state and the Church divided properties following the end of papal temporal power in 1870. The passage reopened on 16 September 2018. Restoration work in 2007 uncovered the burials of Federico II and Francesco IV Gonzaga within the basilica walls.

The Basilica of Santa Barbara was built in two phases, from 1562 to 1567 and from 1569 to 1572. Duke William commissioned a connection between the Ducal Palace and the church, but it was closed at the end of the 19th century. It reopened about a decade ago. Santa Barbara can be considered the masterpiece of both its patron and its architect; it was conceived as a venue for lavish liturgical ceremonies accompanied by high-quality sacred music, the duke's true passion, thanks also to the precious Antegnati organ.
Una basilica tutta da scoprire! Noi siamo entrate e ci ha subito colpito che sia tutta bianca all'interno.Come se fosse in attesa di essere affrescata dai i più grandi artisti.E giá questo la rende particolare! Ma,c'è di piú!Questa chiesa ha subito gravi danneggiamenti con il terremoto del 2012 ed è stata restaurata e ora è affidata a un gruppo di volontari. Una di loro ci ha fatto da guida raccontandoci la storia della basilica,tutti i segreti e gli aneddoti.Cosí abbiamo saputo che l'organo cinquecentesco è unico perchè ha i tasti neri dimezzati. La guida ci ha raccontato anche aneddoti e storia della città e delle famiglie nobiliari del tempo.Davvero vi consiglio di chiedere all'entrata se qualche volontario vi può far da guida. È interessantissimo!
The church is very simple and not as ornate as the cathedral or Sant'Andrea, despite being adjacent to the Palazzo Ducale and Sant'Andrea. It's used for concerts, as it has a very large area between the altar and the seats. There's a 19th-century inlaid piece donated by the Savoy family. Its opening hours are unclear, so it's not easy to find it open. We visited on Saturday afternoon and it was closed, but it was open on Sunday morning.
I visited this church primarily for the Renaissance organ. It has a manual/keyboard and pedalboard. It has the truly rare feature of having a double black key in the Eb/D# and Ab/G# keys. It was beautifully restored in 2006.
