Passeggio del Prato
The Passeggio del Prato is where Arezzo exhales. Spread across roughly ten hectares between the Medici Fortress and the cathedral hill, it is an elliptical sweep of lawn and maritime pines that the city has been using as a lung since the early nineteenth century — for concerts, horse races, Sunday strolls, and now, mostly, for the quiet business of being alive outdoors.
At the park's heart stands Alessandro Lazzerini's 1928 monument to Francesco Petrarca, the poet born in Arezzo in 1304. From the panoramic edge of the park, you can look down over one of the ancient gates into the city below.

People who come back tend to time it for the morning, when the pines cast long shadows across the grass and the elderly residents have the paths largely to themselves. The bar nearest the fortress side does coffee worth stopping for. On a first Sunday in September, the antique fair takes over the whole space and changes the atmosphere entirely — worth knowing before you arrive expecting quiet.
The story behind Passeggio del Prato
The park was laid out in the early nineteenth century on a natural depression between two of Arezzo's dominant hills — one crowned by the cathedral, the other by the Medici Fortress. From its opening, it was called the Passeggio del Prato, and it immediately became the city's main outdoor gathering ground: concerts were held here, as were horse races and civic events.
The Fortezza Medicea at its back was built earlier, in the sixteenth century, for Cosimo I and designed by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. The park grew up in its shadow. Lazzerini's Petrarca monument arrived in 1928, giving the green space a focal point that acknowledged the city's most famous literary son.
Good to know
Free and open around the clock. Reach it on foot from Piazza della Libertà via Viale Bruno Buozzi in about ten minutes, or take Bus 1 toward the train station. Spring (mid-April to mid-June) and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer afternoons can be hot, though evenings cool down quickly.
Mid-April to mid-June and September to early October offer the easiest conditions — warm but not punishing, with reliable sunshine. Summer brings genuine heat in the middle of the day, though the altitude means nights stay cool. Winter can be sharp, with the Tramontana wind occasionally pushing temperatures low enough for snow.

City of Xmas. During this time all Arezzo centre became a wonderful. Here tons of lights, reindeers, dwarfs and Xmas market where to eat. Arezzo is a must see at Christmas 🎄 Do not stop only in Piazza Grande, do come up Gere behind the dome!!
