The RER A drops you at Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy, a station with castle-like spires that is already, unmistakably, part of the show. From here the front gates of Disneyland Paris are a two-minute walk. What greets you is a resort that employs more than 20,000 people across 120 nationalities — a small city in its own right, built from scratch on beet fields east of Paris and opened at 9:01 a.m. on 12 April 1992.
The two parks — Disneyland Park and the recently rechristened Disney Adventure World — sit side by side, connected by Disney Village, a Frank Gehry-designed retail strip in exposed steel and deconstructivist angles that looks nothing like the fairy-tale architecture next door. That contrast is part of what makes this place stranger and more interesting than a simple theme park.

How Disneyland Paris (Marne-la-Vallée) came to be
The story begins not with a ribbon-cutting but with a letter. On 18 December 1985, Walt Disney Company CEO Michael Eisner signed the first letter of agreement with the French government; the formal contract followed on 24 March 1987. Construction started in August 1988 on a site in Marne-la-Vallée chosen partly for its proximity to Paris and its flat, developable land. The resort opened as Euro Disneyland in 1992 with seven hotels and 5,800 rooms.
Within two years it was close to bankruptcy. Philippe Bourguignon took over as president of Euro Disney S.C.A. in 1993, restructured the debt and, in October 1994, renamed the resort Disneyland Paris — a signal that the place was rooting itself in its European context rather than fighting it. Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002; the company gained full ownership in 2017. The second park is scheduled to be officially renamed Disney Adventure World in March 2026.

Summers are warm enough to make the park's outdoor areas comfortable well into the evening, with peak season closing times stretching to 10:30 or 11 p.m. Winters are cold and short on daylight, though the resort operates year-round and a significant portion of attractions are indoors.
