La Gueulardise, Magny-le-Hongre

Tucked into the village of Magny-le-Hongre — literally a five-minute drive from the Disney parks — La Gueulardise is the kind of unpretentious French bistro that resort visitors almost never discover: red-checked tablecloths, a handwritten blackboard menu, and a chef who actually grew up cooking in this region. It is the honest answer to the question of where the locals eat.

What to Order

The weekday lunch formule (entrée + plat or plat + dessert) runs €14–€17 and typically features a terrine de campagne to start, followed by something from the Brie plain — duck confit, andouillette, or a bavette steak with shallot butter. The frites are hand-cut and arrive in a copper pot.

Dessert is old-school French: tarte tatin, île flottante or a cheese plate with — naturally — a wedge of local Brie. The house Bordeaux by the carafe is perfectly drinkable and costs about €7 for 50cl.

The Atmosphere

The dining room seats perhaps 30 people and fills entirely with French families and construction workers at lunch, and with resort hotel staff on their days off. Nobody is performing Frenchness for tourists — this is just how people eat here on a Tuesday.

Service is brisk but warm; the owner often doubles as waiter and will explain the menu in careful, patient English if you need it. Reservations are strongly recommended for Friday and Saturday evenings.

Practical Notes

Magny-le-Hongre is the commune that contains the Disney Village and several resort hotels; La Gueulardise is in the village centre, a short taxi or Uber ride from the parks (€6–€8). There is also free street parking if you have a rental car.

The restaurant is closed Sunday evenings and Mondays — plan accordingly. It does not have a flashy online presence, which is precisely why it remains good.
