Chiesa di Santo Stefano
The first thing you notice at Santo Stefano is the clock on the bell tower — its dial divided into twenty-four hours in the old German fashion, a rarity in Italy that quietly signals you're looking at a building with its own logic. The Gothic church on Piazzetta Santo Stefano was begun in 1468 by the Servite monks, designed by Giorgio Tagliapietra da Como, and consecrated in 1497 after nearly thirty years of work.
The piazza itself stands on what was once the church's cemetery, and the stone fountain at its centre dates to 1573. The neighbourhood around it, Borgo Santo Stefano, was historically the city's ironworking quarter — its blacksmiths and sword-makers had a reputation that reached as far as England and Scotland.

The story behind Chiesa di Santo Stefano
Construction began in 1468 under Giorgio Tagliapietra da Como, with the Servite monks building what would become one of Belluno's more quietly significant Gothic churches. The bell tower foundations were laid in 1480 — and during excavation, workers uncovered a Roman sarcophagus belonging to Caio Flavio Ostilio. The church was consecrated in 1497.
Later centuries brought accretions and losses. The Gothic south portal arrived in 1892, transferred from the suppressed church of Santa Maria dei Battuti, and carries carved images of the Virgin of Mercy with Belluno's patron saints. The adjacent Servite convent — its cloister of ogival arches still standing on the north side — was suppressed in 1806. In 1968, sculptor Dante Moro cast the bronze doors to mark five hundred years since the foundation.
Good to know
A few minutes' walk from Belluno train station. Opening hours are not officially published, so arriving mid-morning on a weekday gives the best chance of finding the church open. No admission fee has been confirmed. An hour is enough to see the interior properly.

Bella chiesa del XV secolo in stile gotico il cui interno é ricco di affreschi e altari lignei riccamente scolpiti. Ai lati delľaltare maggiore ci sono due grandi angeli lignei scolpiti da Andrea Brustolon. Nella cappella di sinistra si trova la statua della madonna dei sette dolori, rappresentati da sette spade che ne trafiggono il cuore, a lei è dedicata una festa cittadina.
A stunning church overlooking the Alps, it houses unique works of art, such as the frescoed chapels and the crucifix and two wooden altar angels sculpted by the artistic genius of Andrea Brustolon. The atmosphere is joyfully intimate, and it's wonderful to find a moment of suspended serenity on its ancient pews, pews engraved with the coats of arms of the most influential families... a special feature: the bell tower clock has a dial divided into 24 hours.
A fairly large church, very beautiful inside although not very bright, with a beautiful section dedicated to Mary. The altar is beautiful with its stained glass and designs.
I'll leave aside the beauty of this small place of worship to move on to the rest. Despite all the noise outside, it's a pleasant place to pray, meditate, and find some peace. It's a shame it's not open at night; otherwise, I'd spend an hour there every day. I could add more, but that would probably go off-topic, beyond the scope of this review, so I'll just say it's the perfect place for those "looking for"...
