Castello di San Nicola de Thoro-Plano
From Corso Reginna, if you turn your back to the sea and look up, you'll spot it: a crenellated silhouette on the Thoro-Plano hill, nine semicircular towers still intact after more than a thousand years. Getting there means roughly 700 steps through narrow lanes and green slopes, with the Gulf of Salerno opening behind you the whole way up.
At the top, Crescenzo De Martino — the castle's current owner — is likely to meet you himself, offer a glass of limoncello, and walk you through what remains of a fortress that once sheltered an entire population from pirates and Lombard raids.

The story behind Castello di San Nicola de Thoro-Plano
Construction began around 840, when the Maritime Republic of Amalfi built a chain of defensive fortresses along the Lattari Mountains. Unlike a feudal residence, this castle was designed as a refuge — a place where ordinary people could survive raids from the sea and incursions from inland Lombard forces. It held. When the Pisans attacked the Amalfi Coast in 1137 and destroyed other coastal fortifications, Maiori's castle resisted.
The structure was restored and enlarged in the 15th century under the Piccolomini dukes, acquiring the seven-sided plan and nine towers that still define its footprint today — roughly 7,500 square metres, built around the older Church of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano and its bell tower. It now carries UNESCO heritage status.

Call ahead to arrange a visit: +39 3389403552. Admission is free, with a voluntary contribution appreciated. Reach it by foot from the San Pietro district or take the SITA bus (Amalfi–Salerno line) to Maiori. Allow 1–2 hours. Wear shoes you can climb in.
The climb is most comfortable from April through June and again in September and October, when temperatures sit between 18°C and 25°C and the light on the valley is at its clearest. July and August are hotter — up to 29°C — and drier, which is fine if you start early in the day. November through January brings the most rain and cooler air, though the castle itself is open year-round by appointment.

We walked up the stairs to the Castle today and I have included photos of the signs so others may find this route. There is a local small blue bus that will take you up Via Castello if walking up stairs for 40 minutes is too much. Mariela is a lovely guide and gave us some homemade limoncello as we were leaving, it was so good we bought a bottle.
The most interesting and exciting, simple, natural and cozy place from Maiori -Amalfi Coast !!!! The castel belongs to Mariela’s family ( is at the 4th generation) , and she make a tour of all the castel and present all their family history… verry verry niceee experienceee for us to meet her!!! 30 min from Maiori . If you go to Maiori, you absolutely must make the effort to hike up to this castle! Despite arriving disgracefully late, the lovely Alfredo welcomed us in, told us to take our time and let us explore this wonderful place. The views are absolutely sensational and the history fascinating. We couldn't believe there was no charge, but please do leave a donation to support their renovations. Go, you won't regret it!
This castle is usually lit up at night. Look inland from the main restaurants street that is perpendicular to the promenade - you'll see it. What an amazing place. Incredible views, an ancient fortress castle with a fascinating history, and a charming friendly multi-generational family who welcomed us in, gave us a guided tour of their castle, let us see (and some cases stroke or hold) their many animals - rabbits, week-old chicks, dog (beautiful 8-month old Luna), ducks, geese, sheep, fish and more. They are also organically cultivating lemons (of course), olives, vegetables (peas, tomatoes, fennel, beans etc.), herbs and more. We finished our guided tour with a sampling of homemade limoncello, pure and mint-infused - delicious! All this for zero entry fee - totally unexpected. Please bring cash to donate in support of this wonderful project. A rare gem.
