Zarautz Saturday Market (Mercado de Zarautz)

Every Saturday morning the central square and surrounding streets of Zarautz fill with stalls selling locally grown vegetables, artisan cheeses, freshly baked bread and the season's catch from the nearby port of Getaria. It is one of the most authentic weekly markets on the Gipuzkoa coast, attended almost entirely by locals rather than tourists.

What to Buy and Taste

The market is famous in the region for its Idiazabal cheese — the smoky, raw-sheep's-milk cheese that is a cornerstone of Basque cuisine. Several farmhouse producers from the interior valleys bring their own wheels and will let you taste before you buy. Prices are noticeably lower than in San Sebastián's La Bretxa market.

In spring look for fresh white asparagus from the Ebro valley and piquillo peppers; in autumn the stalls overflow with wild mushrooms (perretxikos) gathered from the hills above town. A paper cone of freshly roasted chestnuts from the corner vendor is the ideal snack to eat while you browse.

The Atmosphere and Layout

The market radiates out from Plaza de Musikene through the surrounding old-town streets, so it doubles as a walking tour of Zarautz's handsome 16th-century stone architecture. Stallholders greet regulars by name and conversations in Basque (Euskara) drift between the stalls — a reminder that this is a living community market, not a curated tourist experience.

Arrive between 09:00 and 11:00 for the best selection; by noon the most popular stalls begin to pack away. The nearby covered municipal market hall is open on weekdays for everyday provisions.
