Zarautz Main Beach (Playa de Zarautz)
At nearly three kilometres of unbroken golden sand, Zarautz beach is the longest in the Basque Country and a magnet for surfers, sunbathers and coastal walkers alike. The consistent Atlantic swell has made it a World Surf League competition venue, so you may share the water with professionals.
A Beach Built for Everyone
The wide, flat sand means families can set up far from the surf zone while longboarders carve waves closer to the water's edge. Even on busy summer weekends there is genuine space to breathe, something rare on the crowded Costa Brava or Cantabrian resorts.
Rental shops along the promenade offer surfboards, wetsuits and bodyboards by the hour, and several surf schools run beginner lessons every morning from June through September. Txurrut Surf School is one of the most established and highly rated by locals.
The Paseo Marítimo Promenade
A wide, palm-lined promenade runs the full length of the beach, perfect for an evening paseo as the Atlantic turns amber at sunset. Pintxo bars and ice-cream terraces face the sea, so you can eat and watch the surfers without missing a wave.
The promenade connects seamlessly to the old town at its eastern end, making the beach the natural starting point for exploring everything Zarautz has to offer.
