Monte Talaia Viewpoint
Climb or drive to the summit of Monte Talaia (437 m) and you are rewarded with one of the most dramatic coastal panoramas in the Basque Country — the full arc of Zarautz beach below, the green Cantabrian hills behind and, on clear days, the silhouette of the Pyrenees to the east. Locals call it the balcony of Gipuzkoa.
The Hike Up
A well-marked trail starts from the edge of Zarautz old town near the Gaztetxo sports area and winds through oak and pine woodland for roughly 90 minutes at a comfortable pace. The path is well-maintained and signposted in Basque and Spanish, suitable for anyone with basic fitness.
Spring is the finest season for the climb: wildflowers line the path, the air is cool and the Atlantic is a deep, vivid blue. Bring water and a light windproof jacket because the summit ridge can be breezy even in July.
What You See at the Top
From the grassy summit the entire sweep of Zarautz beach is laid out like a map, with the white foam of breaking waves clearly visible thousands of metres below. Look west to spot the village of Getaria on its distinctive fish-shaped headland, and east toward the bay of San Sebastián.
A stone orientation table at the top names the peaks and coastal landmarks visible from each direction, making it easy to get your bearings across the whole Gipuzkoa coastline.
