San Fermín Pilgrim Route Through Villava
Villava sits at the very start of the legendary Encierro route, the same cobbled path that fighting bulls thunder along each July during Pamplona's San Fermín festival. Walking this corridor outside festival season gives you an eerie, intimate sense of the spectacle without the crowds.
The Starting Corrals at Calle Recletas
The journey of the bulls officially begins at the corrals of Santo Domingo, just beyond Villava's boundary, but the approach road through the town is where you can trace the entire 875-metre route on foot at your own pace.
Stand at the curved stone wall near the municipal boundary marker and you can almost hear the rocket flares. Local residents paint chalk arrows on the ground each year to mark the exact running line — look for the faded traces even off-season.
Connecting to Pamplona on Foot
A dedicated pedestrian and cycling path links Villava's centre directly to Pamplona's Old Town in under 25 minutes on foot, following the Arga riverbank. It is one of the most pleasant urban walks in Navarre, shaded by poplars and lined with benches.
The path passes under the medieval walls of Pamplona and deposits you near the Ciudadela, making Villava an excellent, quieter base for exploring the capital without paying Old Town hotel prices.
