Alto de la Mina Hillside Viewpoint
The low ridge immediately east of Villava known locally as the Alto de la Mina offers a sweeping 180-degree panorama that takes in the rooftops of Villava and Pamplona, the Gothic spire of the Cathedral of Santa María la Real, and on clear winter days the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees stretching from Roncesvalles to the Irati massif.
The Climb and the Reward
A signed footpath leaves from the eastern edge of Villava's residential area and climbs gently through scrubby oak and rosemary for about 20 minutes to reach the ridge. The path is rocky in places but requires no special equipment — trail shoes are sufficient.
At the top, a stone cairn marks the highest accessible point and a rusting iron bench invites you to sit and absorb the view. The alignment of the old city of Pamplona is immediately obvious from up here — you can trace the line of the medieval walls and the horseshoe bend of the Arga in a single glance.
Sunrise and Sunset Timing
Photographers favour this viewpoint at sunrise when the low eastern light catches the Cathedral spire and the Pyrenean snowfields simultaneously. In summer, sunrise is before 7 a.m., so an early alarm is rewarded with an entirely private experience.
At sunset the ridge glows amber and the city lights begin to flicker on below, making it an equally compelling evening destination. Carry a headtorch for the descent if you stay past dusk, as the lower path has no lighting.
