Río Arga Riverside Walk & Wetland Meadows
The Río Arga curves around the eastern edge of Villava in a broad, unhurried bend, flanked by wetland meadows and riverside poplar galleries that shelter kingfishers, grey herons and otters. It is one of the most accessible stretches of genuine riparian nature in the entire Pamplona metropolitan area.
The Meander at Esquíroz
Just south of Villava, the river forms a wide meander near the hamlet of Esquíroz where the banks are low enough to reach the water's edge. Bring binoculars in spring and you will spot little egrets wading in the shallows and sand martins nesting in the cut banks.
The meadows here flood seasonally, creating temporary pools that attract waders during migration in April and September. Local birdwatchers consider this stretch one of the best spots within 10 km of Pamplona for spontaneous wildlife encounters.
Poplar Galleries and Picnic Spots
A well-worn dirt path follows the true left bank of the Arga for about 4 km between Villava and Burlada, entirely shaded by tall black poplars whose leaves turn brilliant gold in October. Wooden picnic tables are dotted along the route, and the path is wide enough for pushchairs and wheelchairs for most of its length.
In summer the river is shallow enough at several points for children to paddle safely, and local families arrive with folding chairs and cold boxes every weekend afternoon. It has the relaxed, unselfconscious feel of a place that belongs entirely to the people who live there.
