Parque Natural Illas Atlánticas Coastal Trail — Cabo do Mar
While everyone heads to the Cíes Islands, the rugged granite headland of Cabo do Mar on Vigo's southern shore offers dramatic Atlantic cliff scenery, wild swimming coves and almost no other visitors — all reachable by city bus in 30 minutes. This is Galicia at its most elemental and uncrowded.
The Walk Itself
The circular trail from the village of Cabo do Mar runs roughly 7 km along sea cliffs, through coastal scrub of gorse and heather, and past a series of small sandy coves — Praia de Barra and Praia de Canido among them — where the water is clear enough to see the bottom at 4 metres depth. The path is well-marked but not paved; sturdy shoes are essential.
The highlight is the viewpoint at the headland tip, where the full mouth of the Ría de Vigo opens before you: the Cíes Islands directly ahead, the Portuguese coast to the south, and, on clear days, the outline of the Baiona fortress. It is one of the great unsung views in northern Spain.
Practical Details
Bus line 12A from Vigo's central bus station (Praza de América) runs to Cabo do Mar roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays; the journey takes about 35 minutes and costs €1.50. There is no café at the trailhead, so pack water and a bocadillo.
The coves along the route are swimmable from June to September; water temperatures peak at around 19°C in August. Praia de Canido has a summer lifeguard and a small beach bar — a perfect place to end the walk with a cold drink and your feet in the sand.
