Monte do Castro Park & Hilltop Fortress
Climb to the old Celtic hill-fort that crowns the city and you are rewarded with a sweeping 360-degree panorama stretching from the Cíes Islands to the Portuguese coast. Locals jog here at dawn; visitors tend to arrive at golden hour and stay well past sunset.
The View & the Ruins
The park sits on a 150-metre granite hill right in the urban core, its summit ringed by the remains of an 18th-century artillery battery and much older castro walls. Cannon barrels still poke out between the eucalyptus trees, giving the place a pleasantly theatrical air.
On a clear day — and Galicia has more of those than its rainy reputation suggests — you can pick out the white arc of Samil Beach below, the estuary glittering beyond it, and the three wild silhouettes of the Cíes Islands on the horizon.
Getting There & When to Go
The park is a 15-minute uphill walk from Vigo's old town (Casco Vello) along Rúa do Castro, or a short taxi ride. There are no entrance fees and the gates are open around the clock.
Sunset in summer (around 10 pm in July) is the undisputed prime time: the sky turns tangerine behind the islands while the city lights begin to flicker on below you. Bring a light jacket — the hilltop catches every Atlantic breeze.
