Mercado da Pedra (Oyster Market)
A row of weathered stone stalls beside the old city walls has been selling freshly shucked Galician oysters for over a century — this is the most atmospheric and affordable way to eat the best bivalves in Spain. Arrive hungry and bring cash.
What Makes It Special
The women who work these stalls — known as redeiras and mariscadoras — haul the oysters in from the Ría de Vigo, one of the world's most productive estuaries, and shuck them to order right in front of you. A half-dozen costs around €3–4, served on a paper plate with a wedge of lemon.
The ritual is simple: stand at the stone counter, order by gesturing at the pile of shells, squeeze lemon, tip the shell, repeat. A plastic cup of cold Albariño from the neighbouring bar completes the picture perfectly.
Practical Tips
The market runs along the base of the old city walls on Rúa da Pescadería, just a two-minute walk from the Casco Vello's main square, Praza da Constitución. It operates every day except Sunday, roughly from 9 am to 2 pm.
Oyster quality peaks in the cooler months (October to April), but summer crowds give the market a festive buzz that is hard to resist. Arrive before noon to beat the lunchtime queue and get the freshest stock.
