Pont de Bellerive & Allier Riverbanks at Dusk
Cross the Pont de Bellerive to the quieter east bank of the Allier and turn back towards the city: the view of Vichy's Belle Époque skyline reflected in the wide, slow river at sunset is one of the most underrated urban panoramas in central France. The Opera House dome, the casino towers and the spa rooftops line up in a perfect Edwardian postcard.
The View from Bellerive-sur-Allier
The bridge itself is a handsome iron structure dating from 1907, and the east bank suburb of Bellerive-sur-Allier offers a grassy promenade where locals jog, fish and walk dogs with the whole Vichy skyline as backdrop. The light turns amber around 30 minutes before sunset and the reflections on the Allier — which is broad and calm here — are photographic gold.
A string of riverside bars and guinguettes (open-air dance cafés) operates along the Bellerive bank from May to September. Order a local Kronenbourg or a glass of Saint-Pourçain white wine and settle in for the show.
Along the Allier Greenway
Both banks of the Allier are connected by a well-maintained cycling and walking path called the Loire à Vélo feeder route, which runs south through the Allier gorges. Even a one-hour stroll northward from the bridge takes you past heronries, sandbanks and the occasional otter slide — the river here is genuinely wild despite being minutes from the city centre.
Rent a bike from Vichy Mobilités near the train station (around €10 per day) and follow the green signage south towards Vichy-Cusset for a flat, scenic half-day ride through poplar-lined meadows.
