Parc des Sources & the Grand Établissement Thermal

Vichy built its entire identity around its mineral springs, and nowhere is that story more alive than the Parc des Sources — a long, colonnaded promenade where locals still queue with little ceramic cups to sip iron-rich water straight from the source. The ornate Grand Établissement Thermal anchoring the park is one of the most theatrical spa buildings in France, a wedding-cake confection of wroug

The Hall of the Springs

Step inside the Halle des Sources, a vast Victorian greenhouse of a building where five named springs — Célestins, Grande Grille, Hôpital, Lucas and Chomel — each dispense water at a different temperature and mineral profile. Attendants in white coats hand you a glass; the taste is sulphurous and bracingly alive, nothing like bottled Vichy water.

The ritual of the cure, or thermal cure, has been practised here since the Romans, but the current building dates from 1903 and drips with Art Nouveau detail. Even if you never intend to drink a drop, the architecture alone justifies a slow walk through.

The Park Itself

The surrounding park stretches nearly 900 metres along the Allier, shaded by enormous plane trees whose roots have buckled the gravel paths into gentle waves. In summer, bandstand concerts fill the air on Wednesday and Sunday evenings — a tradition unbroken since Napoleon III declared Vichy his imperial summer capital.

Hire a pedalo on the small lake or simply settle onto one of the green iron chairs and watch the world promenade past. The pace here is deliberately unhurried, and that is entirely the point.
