Marché des Halles de Vichy
Tucked behind the casino on Place Charles de Gaulle, Vichy's covered market hall is a daily sensory overload of Auvergne produce — slabs of Saint-Nectaire cheese sweating gently on marble slabs, braids of garlic from the Allier valley, and Charolais beef so dark it looks almost purple. This is where chefs, retirees and curious visitors all converge before 10 a.m.
What to Buy
The cheese counter run by the Besse family has operated here for three generations; ask for an affiné Saint-Nectaire and they will cut you a wedge from a wheel aged on rye straw. Alongside it, look for Fourme d'Ambert, bleu d'Auvergne and the lesser-known Cantal entre-deux — firm, nutty and perfect for a picnic by the Allier.
Local charcuterie is equally serious: rosette sausage, dried saucisson from the Livradois hills, and jambon d'Auvergne cured over beech wood. A small traiteur stall sells stuffed cabbage and lentil-based dishes to take away — real Auvergnat home cooking at market prices.
The Atmosphere
Saturday morning is the main event, when outdoor stalls spill onto the surrounding streets and flower sellers set up brilliant columns of dahlias and sunflowers. Arrive by 8:30 to beat the crowds and catch the banter between vendors who have known each other for decades.
A coffee at the zinc bar of the brasserie directly inside the hall costs €1.50 and comes with a grandstand view of the whole operation. It is one of those unrepeatable, utterly French half-hours that no guidebook can fully prepare you for.
