Forêt de Montpensier & the Bourbonnais Bocage

Drive 25 km west of Vichy and the flat Allier plain gives way to the rolling, hedge-lined bocage of the Bourbonnais, a landscape of ancient oak and chestnut forest, manor farms and near-total silence. The Forêt de Montpensier, centred on the plateau above the village of Aigueperse, is one of the least-visited old-growth forests in the Massif Central foothills — and one of the most atmospheric.

Walking the Forest

The GR 300 long-distance path cuts through the heart of the forest, but shorter loops of 8–12 km are waymarked in yellow from the car park at the Étang de Sauret, a glacial pond whose black water mirrors the oaks above it. In autumn the forest floor turns copper and gold, and the only sounds are woodpeckers and the occasional roe deer crashing through the undergrowth.

Look for the ruined towers of the Château de Montpensier on the plateau edge — a 15th-century fortress that was the seat of the Dukes of Bourbon before Vichy existed as anything more than a Roman bath. The views north over the Limagne plain on a clear day stretch to the Puy de Dôme volcano 35 km away.

Wildlife and Seasons

The bocage surrounding the forest is an Important Bird Area: short-toed snake eagles nest in the mature oaks, while the meadow edges support corncrakes and little owls. Spring (late April to early June) is the best season for birding and wildflowers; autumn (October–November) for fungi foraging — ceps and chanterelles are abundant after rain.

The nearest village with food and fuel is Aigueperse, 5 km south, which has a weekly Thursday market and a Romanesque church worth a 20-minute detour. Pack a lunch and water; the forest has no facilities.
