Peñón de Ifach Natural Park, Calp

Rising 332 metres sheer from the sea at the edge of the Costa Blanca town of Calp, the Peñón de Ifach is a monolithic limestone rock that looks like it was dropped from another continent. Most visitors photograph it from the beach below; the few who climb it discover one of the most dramatic short hikes in Spain.

The hike to the summit

The trail begins at the park visitor centre at the rock's base and winds upward through Mediterranean scrub before entering a tunnel bored through the rock face — the only way to access the upper section. Beyond the tunnel, the path becomes a hands-and-feet scramble on fixed chains through a colony of nesting Audouin's gulls who show absolutely no fear of hikers.

The summit platform is barely the size of a tennis court, but the view is extraordinary: the twin salt lagoons of Calp shimmer directly below, the white towers of Benidorm punctuate the horizon to the south, and on clear days the mountains of Ibiza are visible 90 kilometres out to sea. The ascent takes about 75 minutes at a moderate pace.

The descent uses the same route and takes about an hour. Wear proper shoes — the rock is slippery when damp — and carry at least one litre of water per person as there is no shade above the tunnel.

Around the base and the town

The natural park at the rock's base protects a colony of lesser kestrels and rare plant species found nowhere else in the Valencia region. The flat coastal path circling the rock's seaward face takes about 30 minutes and passes sea caves and dramatic wave-cut platforms — a worthwhile detour even if you skip the summit.

Calp's old quarter, a five-minute walk from the rock, has a covered market open Tuesday and Saturday mornings where local farmers sell tomatoes, almonds, and dried herbs. The town's waterfront restaurants specialise in fresh red prawns from nearby Dénia — order them simply grilled with sea salt.
