La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Valencia

Santiago Calatrava's gleaming complex rises from a drained riverbed like a sci-fi fever dream made real. Six landmark buildings — including a planetarium shaped like a giant eye and a greenhouse the size of three football pitches — make this one of Europe's most photographed architectural ensembles.

What to see inside

The Hemisfèric planetarium projects immersive IMAX films onto a curved screen 900 square metres wide — book seats in advance because evening shows sell out fast. Next door, the Museu de les Ciències Príncep Felip fills a skeleton-ribbed hall with hands-on science exhibits that genuinely entertain adults as much as children.

L'Umbracle is a free-to-enter landscaped promenade lined with 54 species of native Valencian plants, offering unobstructed views of every building in the complex — the best spot to frame a full panorama shot without paying admission.

L'Oceanogràfic, Europe's largest aquarium, houses beluga whales, sharks, and a tunnel walkway where rays glide silently overhead. Allocate at least three hours and arrive at opening time to beat school groups.

Getting there and saving money

Bus lines 35 and 95 from Plaça de l'Ajuntament drop you at the complex's doorstep; the ride takes about 20 minutes from the city centre and costs €1.50 with a loaded transit card. Cycling is even better — Valencia's free Valenbisi bike-share has a docking station right outside L'Umbracle.

A combined ticket covering the Hemisfèric, Museu de les Ciències, and L'Oceanogràfic saves roughly 30 percent versus buying separately. The complex is dramatically lit after dark, so consider returning in the evening for a free riverside walk even if you've done the paid attractions by day.
