Parc Natural de l'Albufera, Valencia

Just 10 kilometres south of Valencia's city centre, L'Albufera is a vast freshwater lagoon ringed by rice paddies that supply the grain for the world's most famous paella. At dusk, the sky turns molten orange over the water and flocks of flamingos, herons, and egrets settle into the reeds — it is one of Spain's most important wetland habitats.

How to explore the park

The village of El Palmar, deep inside the park, is the best base: a cluster of whitewashed houses surrounded by water on all sides, with several family-run restaurants serving all-i-pebre, a slow-cooked eel stew that has been the local dish here for centuries. Rent a flat-bottomed boat (barqueta) from the village jetty for a self-guided paddle through the reed channels — no experience needed.

A network of cycling and walking paths follows the lagoon's edge and cuts through the rice paddies. The 12-kilometre circuit from El Palmar to Sollana is flat, shaded in parts, and passes several bird-watching hides where you can spot purple gallinules and marsh harriers without a guide.

The rice harvest in September and October transforms the landscape into a patchwork of gold and green, and the flooded paddies in winter reflect the sky like broken mirrors. Each season offers a completely different visual character.

Sunset boat tours

Several operators in El Palmar offer guided sunset boat tours of the lagoon lasting about 90 minutes. The price is typically €10–15 per person and the guides explain the ecology of the wetland and the centuries-old tradition of rice farming as the light fades over the water.

Book ahead in summer as tours fill quickly; in winter you can often show up and find space. Bring a light jacket even in warm months — the lagoon creates its own cool breeze after sundown.
