Vieux Pont & Riverside Promenade Viewpoint

Terrasson's ancient stone bridge arching over the Vézère is one of the most photogenic spots in the Périgord Noir, especially at the golden hour when the old town climbs the hill behind it in a cascade of honey-coloured limestone. It costs nothing and rewards at any time of day.

The best angles on the bridge

The classic shot is taken from the grassy riverbank on the south side, looking north-west so that the bridge, the church of Saint-Sour and the wooded hillside all stack up in a single frame. In summer the Vézère runs low and clear, revealing gravel beds where local children paddle.

Walk to the middle of the bridge itself for a different perspective: upstream the valley narrows into dark forest, downstream the town's old wash-houses and mill buildings line the bank. Dawn mist on the water in September is genuinely spectacular.

Continuing along the riverbank

A flat footpath follows the Vézère east from the bridge for about two kilometres through poplar groves and past fishing spots. It is entirely car-free and connects to a longer greenway that experienced cyclists use to reach Brive-la-Gaillarde, 20 km north.

The promenade is also where Terrasson holds its summer evening events — outdoor cinema, local fêtes and the occasional open-air concert — so check the town's programme if you are visiting in July or August.
