Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire
Perched above the Vézère river, these extraordinary terraced gardens were designed by American landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson and opened in 1996. They weave together water, topiary, myth and medieval history into one of France's most intellectually ambitious public gardens.
A landscape built on legend
The gardens cascade down a hillside that has been cultivated since the Middle Ages, and Gustafson's design layers Celtic mythology, the symbolism of the medieval garden and the universal theme of water into a single coherent journey. Each terrace feels like a new chapter in a story told through clipped hornbeam, stone channels and mist jets.
From the rose pergola at the top to the reflecting pools below, every turn frames a different view of Terrasson's old bridge and the wooded valley. The geometry is bold yet the planting is lush, so even in high summer the space feels intimate rather than formal.
Practical tips for your visit
Guided tours in French (and sometimes English) depart from the entrance and last about 90 minutes — worth taking even if your French is rusty, because the guides bring the mythological programme to life with real enthusiasm.
The gardens are best in late May when the roses are at their peak, or in early October when the hornbeam hedges glow amber. Arrive early on summer mornings to have the upper terraces almost to yourself before coach groups arrive.
