Canoeing the Vézère from Terrasson to Montignac
The stretch of the Vézère river between Terrasson and Montignac (home of the Lascaux caves) is one of the most scenic and accessible canoe routes in the Périgord Noir — a full day of gentle paddling through oak-forested cliffs, medieval villages and clear green water with almost no white water to worry about.
The route and what you'll see
The 30 km paddle from Terrasson south to Montignac typically takes 6–8 hours at a relaxed pace, passing through Le Lardin-Saint-Lazare, Condat-sur-Vézère and the dramatic cliffs around Saint-Amand-de-Coly. The river is calm class I throughout, making it suitable for beginners and families with children over eight.
Wildlife on this stretch is exceptional: grey herons stand motionless on every gravel bar, kingfishers streak between the alders in flashes of electric blue, and otters — though shy — are regularly spotted at dawn and dusk. The limestone cliffs that begin to appear south of Le Lardin are a preview of the dramatic scenery that defines the Vézère all the way to Les Eyzies.
Organising your trip
Several canoe hire companies operate on this stretch; Canoë Dordogne and Canoë Vézère both offer shuttle services so you can do a one-way trip and be returned to your car at Terrasson. Booking ahead in July and August is essential — these shuttles fill up fast.
Pack a picnic and stop on one of the many gravel beaches mid-river; swimming is excellent in summer when the water temperature reaches 20–22°C. Sun protection is critical — the river reflects UV intensely and the current is slow enough that you spend long stretches fully exposed to the sky.
