Mercat de la Independència
The city's main covered market is a proper working-class food hall where butchers, fishmongers and fruit vendors have been trading since the 19th century. Arrive before 10 am and you'll find the stalls at their most abundant and the atmosphere at its most electric.
Inside the iron pavilion
The market occupies a handsome late-19th-century iron-and-glass pavilion on Plaça de la Independència. Stalls spill across two floors: ground level for meat, fish and dairy; upper gallery for seasonal fruit, vegetables, olives and cured meats from the Catalan interior.
Don't miss the local cheese stalls, which stock varieties you won't easily find in Barcelona — aged Garrotxa, creamy Mató and the pungent Serrat from the Pyrenean foothills.
Eat before you shop
Several bar-restaurants open from 7 am inside the market, serving breakfast staples like pa amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil), truita de patates (potato omelette) and freshly squeezed orange juice for well under €5.
Pull up a stool at Bar Mercat, order a cortado and watch the vendors set up their displays — it's a masterclass in how Catalan daily life actually runs, far from the tourist circuit.
