Playa de Penarronda
Straddling the border between Asturias and Galicia, Playa de Penarronda is a long, dune-backed arc of pale sand that feels genuinely remote even in high summer. The beach sits inside a protected coastal wetland, so the backdrop is all reed beds, migratory birds and wind-sculpted pines rather than beach bars.
The beach itself
The sand here is fine and cream-coloured, the waves consistent enough for bodyboarding and beginner surfing, and the water stays refreshingly cold even in August — a relief after driving through the warm interior.
At the southern end a small freshwater lagoon, the Laguna de Penarronda, attracts herons, egrets and, during migration, a surprising variety of waders that birders travel specifically to see.
Dunes and protected landscape
The dune system behind the beach is one of the best-preserved on the Asturian coast and is part of a Natura 2000 protected zone, meaning development is strictly limited and the marram grass and sea holly grow undisturbed.
A marked 3 km circular trail loops around the lagoon and through the dunes, taking about an hour at a leisurely pace and offering close-up views of the wetland flora without leaving the path.
