Pintxos on Calle Mayor
Tafalla's Calle Mayor is a low-key but genuinely rewarding pintxos crawl, where the bars compete quietly but seriously on the quality of their bite-sized offerings. This is Navarrese bar culture at its most authentic — no tourist menus, just locals, good wine and serious snacks.
What to order
The local speciality to watch for is the pintxo of roasted piquillo pepper stuffed with salt cod brandade, a combination that appears in various forms across the bars here and showcases two of Navarre's finest ingredients in one mouthful. Croquetas de jamón ibérico and gildas — the classic olive, anchovy and guindilla skewer — are also ubiquitous and reliably excellent.
Pair everything with a glass of Navarra DO rosado, the pale salmon-pink wine made predominantly from Garnacha that is produced just a short drive away in the Valdizarbe and Olite wine zones. It is crisp, food-friendly and costs almost nothing by the glass.
How the crawl works
The unwritten rule is one or two pintxos and a drink per bar before moving on. Most bars on Calle Mayor and the surrounding streets have their best spread out between 13:00–15:00 and again from 20:00–22:00, when the trays are freshly replenished.
Do not be shy about pointing at what you want or asking the barman what is freshest — this directness is entirely normal and often leads to something not on the counter being produced from the kitchen. Budget roughly €2–3 per pintxo and €1.50–2 per glass of wine.
