Mercado Semanal de Tafalla
Every Tuesday morning the streets around the town centre fill with stalls selling fresh local produce, and this weekly market is where you see Tafalla as its residents actually live it. Pimientos del piquillo, white asparagus from Tudela, artisan cheeses and freshly baked pan de pueblo pile up in colourful abundance.
What to buy and taste
The market is the best place in the area to pick up Navarre's celebrated white asparagus, harvested each spring and sold here both fresh and jarred by the growers themselves. Alongside it you will find the small, sweet piquillo peppers that are roasted and peeled by hand — a world away from anything in a supermarket.
Local cheese producers from the Pyrenean foothills occasionally set up stalls selling Roncal and Idiazabal, two of the region's most prized sheep's milk cheeses. A wedge of either, wrapped in paper and eaten with a chunk of bread on a bench nearby, is a near-perfect Navarrese breakfast.
The atmosphere and surroundings
The market has an unhurried, neighbourly atmosphere: vendors know their regular customers by name, and conversations in both Spanish and Basque drift between stalls. It is small enough to cover in an hour but rich enough to fill a morning if you linger over tastings.
After shopping, duck into one of the bars on Calle Mayor for a mid-morning pincho and a glass of txakoli or local rosado — the Navarrese take their pre-lunch ritual seriously and you should too.
