Cerro del Castillo Mirador
The elevated ridge above the castle ruins forms a natural mirador that gives you a full 360-degree sweep from the Pyrenees in the north to the Bardenas Reales badlands shimmering to the south. It costs nothing, requires no reservation, and delivers the kind of vista that travel photographers chase for hours.
What you can see
On a clear day the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees, including the distinctive profile of the Picos de Anie, are visible to the north, while the vine-covered slopes of the Valdizarbe wine country roll away to the west. The patchwork of cereal fields, olive groves and the silver ribbon of the Río Cidacos below makes for a classic Navarrese landscape.
To the southeast, on exceptionally clear days, the pale ochre tones of the Bardenas Reales semi-desert are just discernible — a reminder of how dramatically the terrain changes within a short drive.
Best times and practical tips
Golden hour before sunset is the undisputed sweet spot: the low light picks out the textures of the fields and turns the castle stones amber. Winter mornings after a cold front passes through deliver the clearest air and the most dramatic Pyrenean backdrop.
Bring a wide-angle lens if you shoot photography, as the panorama is too broad for a standard focal length. A small picnic on the grass here, with a bottle of local Navarre rosado, is one of the most quietly satisfying things you can do in this part of Spain.
