Castillo de Tafalla
Perched on the hill that gives Tafalla its commanding silhouette, the ruins of this 11th-century castle reward every step of the climb with sweeping views over the Navarre plain. It is the defining landmark of the city and the best place to feel the weight of its medieval past.
A fortress shaped by centuries
The castle was originally built under the Kingdom of Pamplona and later became a favourite royal residence of the kings of Navarre, particularly Charles III 'the Noble', who expanded it in the early 15th century into a palatial complex.
Although much of the structure was demolished in the 19th century, the remaining walls and towers still trace a dramatic outline against the sky, and ongoing archaeological work continues to uncover new details about its layout and daily life inside.
Climbing up and looking out
The path from the old town takes about fifteen minutes on foot and passes through a quiet residential quarter before opening onto the hillside. Sunrise and late afternoon are the best times to visit, when the light turns the stone warm gold and the Pyrenees are visible on clear days to the north.
A small interpretive panel at the site explains the castle's history in Spanish and Basque, and the surrounding green space is popular with local families for evening walks.
