Mercat Municipal de Sitges

Tucked inside a handsome early-20th-century building just a few blocks from the seafront, Sitges' covered municipal market is where locals actually shop — and where you'll find the Penedès produce, cured meats and seafood that define the town's table.

What's on the Stalls

Arrive on a Tuesday or Saturday morning and the market hums with vendors selling fat Calçot onions in season (November to April), locally caught red prawns from Vilanova, artisan cheeses from the Catalan interior and cones of freshly fried buñuelos at the snack counter near the entrance.

The fish section is compact but serious — monkfish, sea bass and the prized galera (mantis shrimp) of the Costa Daurada all appear here, priced and labelled by the day's catch.

How to Shop Like a Local

Pick up a small jar of mel de romaní (rosemary honey) from the Penedès hills as an edible souvenir — it travels well and costs around €4. Several stalls also sell house-made pa amb tomàquet kits: a loaf of thick country bread, a net of ripe tomatoes and a bottle of local olive oil.

If you're self-catering, the market is the cheapest and freshest option in town. If you're not, buy a wedge of aged Manchego or a handful of olives and eat them on a bench in the adjacent Plaça del Mercat — a very Catalan breakfast.
