Sigüenza Cathedral

Rising above the rooftops of Sigüenza like a fortress of faith, this 12th-century cathedral is one of Spain's finest Romanesque-Gothic monuments and the undisputed anchor of the city. Inside, every stone corridor holds a surprise — from medieval choir stalls to the haunting tomb of El Doncel.

The Tomb of El Doncel

The alabaster effigy of Martín Vázquez de Arce — a young page who died fighting the Moors in 1486 — is considered one of the masterpieces of Spanish funerary sculpture. He reclines with a book in hand, forever young, his expression uncannily peaceful for a warrior's memorial.

Look closely at the carved details: the tiny pages of the book, the lion at his feet, the heraldic shields. It is the kind of work that stops you mid-stride and refuses to let you leave.

Exploring the Cathedral's Chapels

The Sacristía de las Cabezas features a ceiling encrusted with nearly 300 carved stone heads — no two alike — attributed to Alonso de Covarrubias in the 16th century. It is a room that rewards slow looking.

The Capilla de Santa Librada houses the relics of Sigüenza's patron saint and glitters with gilded altarpiece work. Pick up the official audio guide at the entrance to unlock the stories layered behind each chapel's stonework.

Practical Visit Tips

The cathedral faces the Plaza Mayor and is open daily; combined tickets with the Museo Diocesano next door are excellent value and take the better part of a morning to explore properly.

Morning light floods the nave from the east-facing rose window, making it the ideal time to photograph the interior. Arrive before 10 am in summer to beat tour groups from Madrid.
