Barrio Medieval (Calle Mayor and Plaza Mayor Quarter)
The medieval quarter of Sigüenza is compact enough to explore in an afternoon yet rich enough to reward a full day of slow wandering. Calle Mayor, the main artery, is lined with Renaissance palaces, carved stone doorways and independent shops that have not yet been sanitised into souvenir chains.
Calle Mayor and Its Palaces
Walking the length of Calle Mayor from the train station end to the cathedral takes about 15 minutes, but plan for much longer because the facades demand attention. The Palacio de los Obispos (Bishops' Palace) and the Casa del Doncel — a 15th-century noble residence with an elaborate plateresque doorway — are among the finest examples of civil Renaissance architecture in the province.
Many of these buildings are still privately owned or in institutional use, so you admire them from the street, which only adds to the sense of a living, breathing medieval city rather than an open-air museum.
Plaza Mayor: The Social Heart
The porticoed Plaza Mayor is where Sigüenza gathers: old men on benches in the morning sun, schoolchildren crossing at noon, couples sharing wine at the terrace bars in the evening. The square is framed by the cathedral on one side and a row of stone arcades on the other, and it changes character completely depending on the hour you visit.
On Saturday mornings a small weekly food and produce market sets up under the arcades — nothing as grand as the medieval fair but a genuine local affair where you can buy fresh Castilian cheese, seasonal vegetables and home-baked bread directly from producers.
What to Seek Out on Foot
Duck into the narrow lanes running perpendicular to Calle Mayor — Calle Medina, Calle Villaviciosa — to find flower-filled balconies, a 16th-century fountain and the occasional cat asleep on a warm stone step. These side streets are where the authentic texture of the town lives.
End your wander at one of the traditional bars on or near the plaza for a caña (draught beer) and a pincho of local cured sausage. Bar Alameda and Bar La Cañada are reliable, unpretentious choices frequented by locals rather than tourists.
