Vallunga Valley (Langental) Nature Walk
Hidden at the far end of Selva, the Vallunga — known locally as Langental — is a protected nature reserve where no cars are allowed and the only sounds are cowbells and the Cisles stream. It is the quietest, most authentic corner of the entire valley.
The Walk Itself
A flat, 7 km round-trip gravel path traces the valley floor through larch forests and past traditional Ladin hay barns called 'tabié'. The path begins at the free car park in Selva's Plan de Gralba district and requires zero technical skill — it is pushchair-friendly in dry conditions.
At the valley head the path narrows and the views open onto the Puez plateau cliffs. Marmots are almost guaranteed from June onward, and golden eagles have been spotted circling the limestone walls above the treeline.
Wildlife & Seasons
Autumn is arguably the finest season here: larch needles turn vivid gold in October, the crowds evaporate and the light is honeyed and low. In winter the track becomes a groomed cross-country ski loop, one of the most scenic in the Dolomites.
The valley sits inside the Puez-Odle Nature Park, so picking flowers or disturbing wildlife is prohibited. Respect the rules and the landscape rewards you — ibex occasionally descend to the valley floor at dusk.
