Seceda Ridge & Ortisei Cable Car
Few panoramas in the Alps match the jaw-dropping curtain of rock that unfolds from the Seceda plateau at 2,518 m. Serrated grey spires, emerald meadows and the tiny rooftops of Val Gardena spread below you in every direction.
Getting to the Top
Take the two-stage gondola from Ortisei (St. Ulrich), a 20-minute drive down-valley from Selva, to reach the Seceda summit ridge. The upper station deposits you directly onto a wide grassy saddle where the full Odle/Geisler group erupts from the earth like a cathedral wall.
From the ridge you can walk the famous high trail toward the Fermeda huts, a relatively flat 3 km promenade that keeps the spires in frame the entire way. Sunrise is extraordinary — arrive on the first gondola to beat the crowds and catch alpenglow turning the rock amber.
What to Bring & Wear
Even in July the wind at Seceda bites; pack a mid-layer and sunscreen regardless of the valley temperature. The path is well-marked and mostly gravel, so trail runners or light hiking boots are sufficient for the ridge walk itself.
A polarising filter or lens hood is essential for photographers — the contrast between white limestone and deep-blue Dolomite sky is intense. Bring cash for the Baita Sofie mountain hut, which serves warm Tirtlan (fried pastry pockets) and local Lagrein wine.
