Ciampinoi Sunrise Ski & Hike
Most visitors ride the Ciampinoi gondola from Selva mid-morning with the crowds, but those who time the first cabin of the day — or hike up via the summer trail before 07:00 — discover a completely deserted 2,254 m plateau bathed in rose-gold alpenglow. It is one of Selva's best-kept secrets.
The Sunrise Experience
In summer, a well-marked hiking trail (red blazes, approx. 90 min ascent) climbs from Selva directly to the Ciampinoi summit station, gaining around 700 m through pine forest and open scree. Arrive at the top as the sun clears the Sella massif and the entire Sassolungo-Sassopiatto wall ignites in colour — with nobody else around.
In winter, the first ski patrol run of the day from Ciampinoi down to Selva on freshly groomed corduroy is a ritual among local ski instructors. The Sella Ronda circuit connects here, so strong skiers can be on the famous 26 km loop before the lifts officially open to the public.
After the Sunrise
The Rifugio Ciampinoi at the top serves espresso and fresh Apfelstrudel from around 08:30 — a perfect reward after the early ascent. The terrace faces directly south toward the Sella Group and catches the first warming rays of the day.
From the summit you can continue on foot along the ridge trail toward Passo Gardena (Grödner Joch) for a longer half-day loop, or simply descend on the gondola and be back in Selva for a full breakfast before most guests have left their hotels.
