Selva Christmas Market (Mercatino di Natale)
Selva's intimate Christmas market, held each December in the village centre around the parish church of San Silvestro, is one of the most genuinely local in the Dolomites — far smaller and less commercialised than Bolzano's famous version, and all the better for it. Hand-carved wooden figures and mulled Glühwein under fresh snow: this is the real thing.
What to Find at the Stalls
Val Gardena has been a centre of wood carving for over 400 years, and the market showcases that tradition directly — artisans sell hand-carved nativity figures, bears, chamois and abstract sculptures, many signed and numbered. Prices range from €10 for small ornaments to several hundred euros for large signed pieces.
Food stalls offer Zelten (a dense fruit-and-nut bread traditional to the region), roasted chestnuts, local honey, and Schüttelbrot (crispy rye flatbread) packaged as gifts. The Glühwein is spiced with local herbs and served in ceramic mugs you can keep for a small deposit.
Timing & Atmosphere
The market typically runs from late November through 6 January, with the busiest and most atmospheric evenings being the first two weekends of Advent when the village choir performs in front of the illuminated church. Snow is almost guaranteed by early December at 1,563 m altitude.
Selva's compact size means the market and the ski slopes coexist perfectly — you can ski the Dantercëpies runs in the morning and browse carved nativity figures in the afternoon. The combination is uniquely Alpine and deeply satisfying.
