Sant Antoni Old Town & the Egg Monument Waterfront

Most visitors only see Sant Antoni's famous Sunset Strip of bars along the western promenade, but the compact old town behind the 14th-century fortress-church of Sant Antoni Abat has a quieter, genuinely Ibizan character — whitewashed lanes, family-run restaurants and the striking Egg Monument on the harbour that marks the spot where Christopher Columbus is locally claimed to have been born.

The Harbour and the Egg

The seafront Passeig de ses Fonts is anchored by the Egg Monument (L'Ou de Colom), a large white egg-shaped sculpture referencing the legend that Columbus — claimed by some Ibizans to have been born on the island — demonstrated the concept of thinking differently by balancing an egg on its end. Whether you buy the legend or not, the harbourfront at dusk is genuinely lovely, with fishing boats, palm trees and the warm smell of the sea.

The western end of the promenade is where the famous Sunset Strip bars (Café del Mar, Café Mambo, Savannah) line up facing west — arrive by 20:00 in summer for a seat, order a cocktail and watch the sun sink into the sea to a soundtrack of ambient music.

Exploring the Old Town Streets

Duck off the waterfront into Carrer de Guillem de Montgri and the lanes around the church of Sant Antoni Abat — the 14th-century church was built as a fortified refuge against pirate raids and its thick stone walls and defensive tower are still intact, giving it a fortress-like grandeur unusual for a parish church.

The streets immediately north of the church are where locals eat: look for Can Pujol (on the road to Port des Torrent) for outstanding fresh fish, or Es Rebost de Can Prats on Carrer del Progrés for home-style Ibizan cooking at prices that feel like a different island from the beach clubs.
