Ca la Tere
Ca la Tere is the kind of restaurant that travel writers mean when they say 'eat where the locals eat' — except here it is actually true. A family-run tavern on Carrer de Gràcia, it has been serving honest Catalan home cooking to Sabadell workers, families and the occasional visiting food journalist for decades, with a daily menú del dia that changes with the market and the seasons.
What to Order
The escudella i carn d'olla on winter Thursdays is a rite of passage: a deep, golden broth with galets pasta followed by a plate of boiled meats and vegetables that will make you understand why Catalan grandmothers are revered.
In summer, the esqueixada de bacallà — shredded salt cod with tomato, black olives and a drizzle of good olive oil — is as refreshing as a sea breeze, and the grilled calf's liver with caramelised onions is a masterclass in simplicity.
The Atmosphere
The dining room is all tiled floors, paper tablecloths and the comfortable noise of people actually enjoying their lunch rather than photographing it. Service is brisk, affectionate and entirely in Catalan unless you ask otherwise.
The €13–15 menú del dia includes a starter, main, dessert, bread and a glass of house wine or water — one of the best-value lunches in greater Barcelona.
