Torre Donà (Medieval Tower of Rovigo)
Rising above the rooftops of the old city centre, the 11th-century Torre Donà is one of two surviving medieval towers that once defined Rovigo's skyline. Climb its worn stone steps and the whole Po Delta plain unfolds before you in every direction.
A Tower That Outlived Its Rivals
Rovigo once bristled with defensive towers built by rival noble families, much like San Gimignano in Tuscany. Of the original cluster, only Torre Donà and the nearby Torre Grimani survive, standing side by side in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II like old sentinels.
Torre Donà is the taller of the two at roughly 38 metres and dates to the early medieval period. Its brick construction is characteristic of Po Valley Romanesque, and close inspection reveals layers of repair and reinforcement added across the centuries.
Visiting and What to Expect
The tower sits right in the heart of the city's main square, so it is impossible to miss on any stroll through the centre. The base area is freely accessible and the exterior alone rewards a good ten minutes of photography.
Occasional guided openings allow visitors inside; check with the local tourist office (IAT Rovigo) for scheduled access dates, especially during the Giornate FAI di Primavera in spring when many monuments open their doors.
Pair the visit with a walk around the adjacent Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, lined with arcaded palazzi and the 18th-century Palazzo Roverella, to get the full flavour of historic Rovigo in one sweep.
