Pinacoteca dei Concordi (Accademia dei Concordi)
Tucked inside the 18th-century Palazzo Roverella, the Accademia dei Concordi houses one of northern Italy's most underrated art collections, including works by Giovanni Bellini, Giambattista Tiepolo and Piazzetta. You'll likely have the galleries almost to yourself.
The Collection: Bellini to Tiepolo
The pinacoteca's crown jewel is a small but exquisite Madonna and Child attributed to Giovanni Bellini, its gold-tinged tenderness typical of the Venetian master's early period. Nearby hang canvases by Palma il Giovane and Luca Giordano that would draw queues in Venice but here invite quiet contemplation.
The Tiepolo works — including preparatory sketches and smaller devotional paintings — offer a rare chance to study the artist's process up close without the distraction of tourist crowds. The lighting in the upper galleries is excellent for appreciating the delicacy of the brushwork.
Beyond the Paintings: Maps, Manuscripts and Coins
The Accademia dei Concordi is not just a picture gallery. The same institution holds an extraordinary collection of antique maps of the Po Delta and the Polesine region, some dating to the 16th century, which are displayed in rotating exhibitions in the lower rooms.
A numismatic cabinet contains coins from Roman Hadria (modern Adria, just south of Rovigo) and medieval Venetian ducats, providing a tangible thread back through two millennia of local history.
The library, one of the oldest in the Veneto, is accessible to researchers and occasionally opens for public tours — ask at the front desk when you arrive.
